What is lifeguard certification?

A lifeguard is a person in charge of supervising swimmers or any participant in water sports to make sure they’re behaving safely and if needed, rescue them when in danger. They usually operate in swimming pools, beaches, lakes, water parks and others. They have strong abilities on swimming and have been trained on providing first aid.

How much does it costs to become a lifeguard?

Costs for becoming a lifeguard varies by state or province. Usually costs ranges from $150 to $500 and includes CPR, first aid and AED training.

What are the requirements to have a lifeguard certification?

Qualifications to become a lifeguard varies by location but in general:

  • You need to be at least 15 years old by the end of the last day in class.
  • Be able to swim for a certain distance is also tested before starting the course.

The swimming requirements vary by region but in general you must:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit water without using a ladder or steps.

How long does a lifeguard certification last?

Lifeguards certifications expire in two or three years. After that they need to be renewed. In some states, the expiration is different. For example, in the state of New York the CPR certification needs to be renewed every year and because for being a lifeguard you need to have a valid CPR certification, the lifeguard certification will only last one year.
